Congratulations to our VCE Premier’s Award Recipients

We are delighted to be celebrating the successes of past and present students who have been recognised for their outstanding academic achievements in their 2023 VCE studies at the VCE Premier’s Awards.

The annual Premier’s VCE Awards recognise students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). The ceremony, which took place last week at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, was attended by the awardees, as well as Michaela Kelly, Lynda Wall and Olivia Wilson.

Young Old Grammarian Eloise Bisley (2023) was presented with the Premier’s VCE Award for excellence in Philosophy. Congratulations also go to current Grammarians Ava Allen, who was presented with a Premier’s VCE Award for Drama, Esther Nastri, who also received a Premier’s VCE Award for Drama, Yier Hong, who was recognised for Classical Studies, and Ondine Thompson who, in addition to her recent Student of the Year Award from Box Hill Institute – where she completed her VCE VET Equine Studies course, has also been awarded a VCE Premier’s Award.

We also congratulate the teachers of these students: Caroline Foster (Classical Studies), Dr Lenny Robinson (Philosophy) and Olivia Wilson (Drama).

We invite you to read through the below profiles of these outstanding students, who in addition to pursuing and achieving excellence in their studies, have demonstrated unwavering commitment to their interests and School life at MGGS through their co-curricular pursuits.

Ava Allen

VCE Premier’s Award for excellence in Drama

Ava started her MGGS journey at Wildfell in Year 5 in 2017. Her favourite thing about MGGS is the culture of sisterhood coming from the girls who make up our student body. She says, “as simple as it sounds, convening in the [Year 12] Common Room nearly every morning, I have learned to appreciate the presence of [her peers] and the ability to just interact with everyone.”

Ava was always certain that she wanted to undertake Drama and Legal Studies as part of her VCE, but was unsure about her other studies. She decided to take advice from her older brothers and their friends about which subjects they enjoyed during VCE, and aimed to select studies that interested her the most, she would enjoy taking and would enable her to excel. These include Physical Education, History Revolutions, Further Mathematics and English.

Eloise Bisley

VCE Premier’s Award for excellence in Philosophy

Eloise joined our community at Year 7 in 2018. Her journey through the School is marked by her love of the community and the inclusivity, support and traditions that characterised her MGGS experience.

For VCE, Eloise chose to complete Classical Studies, Physics, Literature, History Revolutions, Mathematical Methods and Philosophy. “I chose the subjects that I was interested in and had historically done well in, even though they are a bit of an off mix,” she reflected. Eloise aimed to sample a range of disciplines and says this kept her “super engaged” during her studies, as it enabled her to work alongside different sets of people and use different sets of skills.

Yier Hong

VCE Premier's Award for excellence in Classical Studies

Yier came to Melbourne Girls Grammar in Year 7. Throughout her time here, she has loved the “encouraging atmosphere…and how supportive the community is.” Particularly her teachers, who she says have all been “wonderful” in supportive her through her learning, assessments and personal growth over the years. At the end of Year 10, Yier decided to challenge herself by selecting two Unit 3 and 4 studies to complete in Year 11, leaving her with just four to complete throughout Year 12. Yier used the knowledge and help of her teachers to weigh up her different options and figure out what would interest her most, as she knew this would encourage her to engage with her work.

After careful consideration, Yier decided to complete Units 3 and 4 of Mathematical Methods and Classical Studies in Year 11, followed by English Language, Specialist Mathematics, Latin and Physics in Year 12. Yier chose to study three STEM subjects as she “has always preferred the logical and procedural aspects of mathematics and physics.” She also “wanted a good balance of subjects, so…chose three humanities subjects which are more writing-heavy.” So far this year, she thinks this has been a “good combination as it allows [her] brain to switch modes of thinking and avoid fatigue in study sessions.”

Esther Nastri

VCE Premier's Award for excellence in Drama

Esther joined the MGGS community in Year 7 in 2019. Esther’s favourite thing about MGGS is the relationships that she has been fortunate enough to form with her friends and teachers, and the memories she has made that will “stay with [her] well into [her] adult years.” She says, “while school has been about learning academically, it’s been as much, to [her], about learning to communicate and [work in] a team around and alongside others.”

Esther has chosen to study Drama, Literature, English Language, Legal Studies and Latin. Esther chose to complete Drama in Year 11 because she knew it would “benefit [her], in the sense that [she] knew…[she] would devote a lot of time to, both consciously and unconsciously,” because she has a passion for performing and hopes to pursue a career in it, and  because it would “[allow her] to spend more time focusing on [her] other subjects” during Year 12. She comments that her Literature and Drama studies have, to a degree, come hand-in-hand, encouraging her love of Shakespeare and instinctive analytical tendencies in different ways.

Ondine Thompson

VCE Premier's Award for excellence in Equine Studies (VET)

Ondine Thompson completed VET Equine Studies (Certificate III) as part of her VCE studies over 2022 and 2023, completing Units 3 and 4 in 2023 offsite at the Box Hill Institute.

The VCE Equine Studies course is an introduction to the equine industry during which students learn the skills and knowledge to work safely with horses including basic horse husbandry and care, understanding equine behaviour, daily work routines and equine anatomy. The Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) require students to complete approximately 80 hours of structured workplace learning placement throughout the course.

Ondine’s proactive approach to learning created an inclusive environment for her classmates at the Box Hill Institute, which saw her awarded Student of the Year for 2023 in Equine Studies.

Box Hill Institute awarded Ondine with the Student of the Year Award for her performance in VET Equine Studies.
