Over the weekend, our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Rob Houghton, was at OFFSEAS – Outdoor Forum For South East Asian Schools, in Bangkok.
“The annual OFFSEAS conference brings together an engaged community of educators, school leaders, activity providers and other experts in the field to build connections and engage in a dialogue to take learning beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.”
Drawing on his experience developing MGGS’s comprehensive Outdoor Education curriculum — a uniquely tailored program created entirely by Rob — he delivered a workshop on designing outdoor education programs from the ground up.
The session generated strong interest, sparked collaboration offers, and positioned Melbourne Girls Grammar as an international leader in this field. It was a valuable opportunity to contribute to the broader conversation around outdoor education and to share the innovative work taking place at MGGS.

Outdoor Education at MGGS is growing and we have big plans.
Outdoor education is a powerful learning experience, something that participants will remember for the rest of their lives. At MGGS, we want to incorporate that sort of learning into the everyday life of the School. With regular contact with the outdoors, we will build a love of nature, a competence, and a confidence amongst our students.
As outlined in Melbourne Girls Grammar’s innovative and tailored Outdoor Education curriculum, each experience our Grammarians have will develop on the learning from the previous one with our ultimate goal being for them to confidently embark on a Graduation Expedition in Year 10, which will become a rite of passage and a source of pride for all Grammarians.

To explain our process and our programs better, we’re introducing our first Outdoor Education Handbook. Aimed at parents and prospective parents of our students, the handbook goes through our philosophy of outdoor education, covers the outdoor journey our students take throughout their school careers, and gives practical information in preparation for the compulsory camps.
