“As I left the [International Women’s Day] event, one thought lingered in my mind: how incredibly fortunate I am to be in a position where everything I could ever need to succeed is within reach. To be a young woman with the world at my fingertips, surrounded by opportunities, is a privilege I refuse to take for granted. And with privilege comes duty – the duty to give back, to amplify the voices of others, and to stride forward with purpose.” — Cecilia, Year 12
“In and of the world”, this is the phrase that will define our new Strategic Plan!
Our Grammarians must be of the world. They are shaped by the times and places, including their present realities. They recognise and respect the importance of diversity of belief and the rights of others. Their MGGS education prepares Grammarians who operate in the world; they are active in shaping their realities. They see clearly, and they act boldly as ethical women of action. Our work at Melbourne Girls Grammar is to educate our Grammarians with the capability to be active and successful participants in complex times. We educate Grammarians to be ethical, approaching their futures with integrity, compassion, courage and self-discipline.
Our Strategic Plan 2025-2030 is our communication to the community of our strategic intent, our organisational goals, and the actions required to achieve those goals. In creating this Strategic Plan, we have consulted with our community, accruing data through whole community surveys, focus groups, academic and co-curricular results. We have affirmed our assumptions of the MGGS Vision, Mission and Values. We have started with the end in mind. Additionally, as part of the development of this plan, it became apparent that we wanted to define the key profiles of our learners, teachers, professional support staff and leaders. For it is this group that lives the daily life of the School and sets our culture. In the 2014 text, The Restless School by Roy Blatchford (2014), we read, “The inner belief and commitment to realising excellence by those who lead schools is the starting point. At its beating heart the excellent school is a place where people care more than others think is wise, [take] risks more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical and expect more than others think is possible.” We look forward to sharing more about our 2025-2030 Strategic Plan as the year unfolds.
As we begin Term 2, I would like to remind everyone, especially our senior students, of the importance of sleep. I am well known for the mantra ‘sleep is your friend’. In the busy schedule of school, it is essential for growing children, adolescents and young adults to ensure that they get sufficient sleep. Sleep is as important as exercise and nutrition, and our young Grammarians should strive for a minimum of nine hours of sleep per night. Inadequate sleep will impact negatively on mood, wellbeing, and academic performance, so please support your daughters to get to bed early, turn off devices, and limit television and screen time so that they can start each day re-energised and refreshed. Our Grammarians’ days are so full that sleep is one of the essential ingredients that sets them up for success.
Yours in learning
