Xanthe Chosen as an Ambassador for the Melbourne Theatre Company

In the early months of 2024, a tutor of mine at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) pulled me aside from class. Naturally, I feared the worst. However, my worry proved to be misplaced as she emphatically detailed an extraordinary opportunity, an Ambassadorship for the Melbourne Theatre Company.

Following an extensive nomination process of comprehensive references, personal essays, and technical questions, I was welcomed to the official team of the MTC in February this year. Solidified by my professional headshot and MTC ID.

The Melbourne Theatre Company unveils provocative discourse through illustrations of culture in both original and adapted performances. Within my new role as a Junior Ambassador, I am welcomed to all shows throughout the season. I have already been fortunate enough to be taken to The Robot Dog and The Removalist by the company. Following each show, I am welcomed backstage to meet the entire cast and crew. Although it is wonderful to be behind the scenes of such professional productions, the ability to ask questions of the creatives is an invaluable resource that has proven to be an endless source of wisdom.

It has been an incredible experience to tour the headquarters and see the crucial aspects of a performance that often aren’t in the limelight. Journeying through the costume department developed my understanding of the profession’s vast network of intertwining roles. From wig making to millinery, experiencing the realistic chaos of the industry only enhances the palpable magic of theatre.

The generosity of the MTC extends further, as they focus on building a network of resources and connections for their ambassadors through guest speaker programs. Professionals from across the industry are brought together to share insight and cultivate a strong industry connection. Most recently, past Ambassador Paris Leveque, who’ll be starring in The Book of Mormon later this year, gave invaluable insight into the logistical side of being an actor, as well as her own advice as a mentor.

Theatre is one of the most privileged forms of engaging in political and cultural discourse. Although it is an ancient form of entertainment, the freedom of expression that is created is monumental in our society’s ability to question and be questioned. Through this ambassadorship, the pathways and routes to the creation of impactful art have been uncovered to me, which is why I am so proud to be a 2025 Ambassador for the Melbourne Theatre Company.
