Last weekend, the Malthouse Theatre was alive with energy, music, and a whole lot of Wildcat spirit as Melbourne Girls Grammar’s Senior Years Production of Disney’s High School Musical On Stage dazzled audiences across three performances. Anticipation had been building for months, and the production more than delivered – offering a vibrant, heartfelt and joy-filled experience that left each crowd cheering for more (and they got it, with an unbelievable medley-come-encore to finish the show).
Directed by our School Production Co-ordinator, Cherie Hozynka, the production was more than just a nostalgic nod to the beloved Disney classic. It was a thoughtful exploration of identity, courage and connection. Cherie admitted she was conscious of selecting such an iconic show. “It’s easy to see High School Musical as a high-energy spectacle,” Cherie shared in her Director’s Note, “but if you look closer, you’ll discover a story about young people testing the edges of who they’re expected to be.” This deeper message resonated powerfully through the performances, as students brought new life and authenticity to familiar characters.
“When we decided to stage High School Musical, I had two immediate thoughts. First: this is going to be a blast. Second: we’ll need to work hard to find the heart in a show people think they already know. ”
From the opening number to the final bows, the cast’s commitment and chemistry were undeniable. Whether it was the infectious energy of ‘We’re All In This Together’ or the emotional vulnerability of ‘Breaking Free,’ each scene was infused with passion and polish. The Drama Captains, Emily and Freya reflected on the journey with pride and affection: “This show isn’t just about high school cliques or basketball games. It’s about finding your voice, supporting your friends, and daring to step outside your comfort zone.”
Behind the scenes, the production was a true team effort. From the choreography and vocal coaching to the backstage crew and costume design, every element came together seamlessly. The cast, a mix of seasoned performers and first-time actors, formed a tight-knit ensemble that extended beyond the stage. “Rehearsals were filled with laughter, pep talks, and the kind of inside jokes that only make sense after months of shared chaos,” Freya and Emily recalled.

The result? A production that was not only entertaining, but encouraged us to think twice about the true themes of the story –“not as it began on screen”, but in the way this cast and this crew brought it to life on stage. It reminded audiences – young and old – that embracing who you are and supporting others in doing the same is always worth singing about.
