The 2026 School Concert, held on Thursday 13 August at The Edge Federation Square, was a memorable evening that celebrated the talent, dedication and commitment of MGGS musicians. Featuring performances from students across Years 5 – 12, the program showcased the depth of musical excellence within the MGGS community and concluded with the School Anthem Nisi Dominus by A. E. Floyd.

Music Captain and soloists, Stephanie, shares her reflections on the evening and the experiences that made the 2026 School Concert such a memorable occasion.

The evening was a collection of months of hard work from students across Year 5 to Year 12. It brought the School together to perform a beautiful program of music, with MGGS making its return to The Edge in Federation Square. Parents, staff, students and Board members came together to support one another in a presentation of MGGS at its best.

Every person performed beautifully. Senior Choir opened with Ad Astra, also the title of this year’s concert. The Stage Band gave an extremely entertaining rendition of Uptown Funk, the soloists shone with their choices of music, and the School Orchestra performed a stunning Haydn and a Farandole before every performer came together on stage to sing the School anthem, Nisi Dominus. Each performance was given with grace and poise, having been meticulously rehearsed, which was evident in the calibre of music presented on stage.

I would like to thank every teacher who contributed to this year’s School Concert, especially our Head of Music, Elizabeth duBlet. Without her efforts, the concert would not have been possible. I would also like to thank all of our parents who have driven us to countless rehearsals, listened to us practice, and supported us and our love for performing and music every step of the way.

As this was my final School Concert at MGGS, I will look back most fondly on having the opportunity to sing a solo with the School Orchestra. It has always been a goal and a dream of mine to sing with the Orchestra, and to perform a song that I love so much from ‘Sweeney Todd’ made it especially special. I will also look back extremely fondly on singing with Senior Choir for the last time in this format before it changes slightly ahead of the Carols Service. Singing such beautiful music with them, alongside a group of my closest friends, is something I will remember with much love and joy.

For future Music Leaders, I would say be as organised as you possibly can be. Organise meetings, make sure you know everything you need to do, and offer to help with extra aspects of events, such as stage management. There is a lot to do, and you want to make sure you are on top of it all.

Being Music Captain is a role I am deeply grateful for. While balancing the responsibilities of the position with school and study can be challenging at times, the experience has been both rewarding and memorable.
