Encouraging Connection at School and at Home

As a school, we are committed to creating the best possible learning environment for our Grammarians. The MGGS Mobile Device Policy aligns with our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth.

Current educational research highlights the significant impact of mobile devices on student learning. Studies have shown that the presence of mobile devices can lead to distractions, reduce the quality of learning, and affect the emotional and social development of students. By restricting the use of devices (including mobile phones and smart watches) during school hours, we aim to enhance student focus, engagement, connection and overall wellbeing.

Encouraging a Healthy Relationship with Technology at Home

While mobile phones are now off-limits at School, we recognise that technology plays an important role in students’ lives outside of the classroom. The key is finding a balance that supports both their wellbeing and development. Here are a few ways parents can help:

  • Model Positive Device Use – Children learn by example. By setting boundaries around your own screen time and prioritising face-to-face interactions, you show them the value of being present.
  • Create Tech-Free Zones – Encourage conversation and connection by designating areas in your home, such as the dinner table or bedrooms, as device-free spaces.
  • Set Clear Expectations – Work with your child to establish guidelines around screen time, social media use and online safety, ensuring they understand the reasons behind these boundaries.
  • Encourage Offline Activities – Support their engagement in sports, hobbies and social events that don’t involve screens. These activities promote resilience, creativity and real-world connections.
  • Focus on Open Communication – Have ongoing discussions with your child about how they are feeling, what they are experiencing and the benefits they notice from reduced screen time.

Students in Years 5 to 11 are now required to leave their mobile devices locked in their lockers for the duration of the school day and will no longer be able to use their phones to make EFTPOS purchases at the T-Bar or Artemis Cafés with mobile devices. The key features of our Mobile Device Policy can be found on eVI here for students and parents.

By working together, we can empower our students to be more mindful, present and connected—both at school and at home. Let’s embrace this shift as an opportunity to foster stronger relationships, deeper learning and a healthier balance with technology.
