As we approach the end of another school year, I am filled with pride for all that our Grammarians have accomplished. Across the School, our students have shown curiosity, resilience and a deep commitment to their learning. We look forward to celebrating and reflecting on the year that was over the last two weeks of Term 4.
In the midst of the many events, we encourage our students to slow down occasionally and take a moment to appreciate all that they have experienced and the growth that has occurred throughout the year.
In recent weeks, Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 Grammarians undertook their examinations, approaching this important assessment period with maturity and focus. I congratulate them on their preparation and hard work. These experiences build academic strength and integrity, developing the confidence and independence that will serve them well in the years ahead.
A particular joy this term was attending the ELC 3-year-old Christmas Concert last week. Our 4-year-old students will be performing this Thursday 27 November. Our youngest learners brought such delight to the stage in the Chapel of St Luke. It is a reminder of the wonder that sits at the very beginning of the MGGS journey and the strong sense of belonging that grows from these early years.
Another highlight was welcoming two enthusiastic Year 7 students as ‘Principals for a Day’. Rory and Emma embraced the experience wholeheartedly, visiting classrooms, meeting with staff and developing a deeper understanding of school leadership. Their thoughtful questions and eager engagement when presenting ‘If We Ran the School’ to the MGGS Executive team was a reminder of the leadership potential emerging in our younger Grammarians.
Last week, our Year 7 cohort joined students and staff from Melbourne Grammar School to take part in the annual Year 7 Melbourne Experience program. Students have spent the week navigating the Melbourne CBD investigating a chosen enquiry topic. As part of their research, students have attended excursions to ACMI, Melbourne Museum, the Immigration Museum and Scienceworks, and were lucky to enjoy a tour at the Melbourne Cricket Ground – they even held a quick press conference.
Year 6 ventured to Canberra for a wonderful week of learning about our nation’s capital. They behaved beautifully and were bright representatives of Melbourne Girls Grammar. They visited the National Capital Exhibition, National Film and Sound Archives, National Electoral Education Center, National Arboretum playground, Royal Australian Mint, High Court of Australia, Government House (where they bumped into Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia), Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Archives of Australia, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon and more. What a treat for Year 6.
We enjoyed a wonderful Valedictory Dinner in celebration of the Class of 2025. Rowena Mytton, President of the Old Grammarians Society, welcomed our graduands into the Society, reminding them of the importance of maintaining connection with the School in the years to come. We congratulate all students on their hard work and wish them a well-earned rest as they enter into post-schooling life. 2025 Valedictorian Chanara spoke eloquently about the Class of 2025’s journey from Year 7 during the COVID-19 pandemic to now and the joy they’ve shared along the way.
Our whole community will come together on Wednesday 26 November for Speech Night, a celebration of academic excellence and endeavour. The evening is an important opportunity to recognises the achievements of our Grammarians and to honour the dedication of staff and families who guide and support them.
We are also eagerly anticipating our Carol Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday 3 December, one of the most treasured events on our School calendar. This beautiful service allows us to gather in reflection and celebration as we close the year.
As the holiday season approaches, I extend my warmest wishes to all families. I hope the weeks ahead bring rest, connection and joy. Thank you to our students for their remarkable efforts, and to our staff and families for your continued partnership and support.
I look forward to welcoming you back in the new year for another exciting year at Melbourne Girls Grammar.
