“EWAS”, e w, a, s. “Ethical Women of Action,” this is an acronym the 12s have been referring to this year. We hear ethical women of action spoken about often in formal speeches, assemblies, and in more serious tones, but this light-hearted acronym encapsulates the ability the Class of 2026 had, to create a culture of spirit, and connection in everything they touched. This …was felt by almost everyone surrounding them. At every event, while you could hear hundreds of voices in the crowd, theirs were the ones that dominated. They were never shy of being loud, and present, and in doing that, they fostered a sisterhood grounded in their contagious empowerment and spirit. And while we saw this overtly, they were also a group that were hard working and motivated and achieved excellence because of that. So, Year 12, your motto was Nisi Dominates, and I think that was the perfect fit, because you dominated here at MGGS, and now, it’s time for the EWAS to dominate the world”. Katherine Hrysoudis, School Captain 2027.
At the 2026 Valedictory Assembly on 19 October, Katherine paid tribute to the Class of 2026 and aptly described their stewardship and leadership of the School. There were whoops of joy, vigorous applause and tears as our Year 12 cohort took to the stage of Hamer Hall and sang the School Anthem, Nisi Dominus for the last time with the School.
The VCE Examinations are well underway and our Grammarians are approaching each day calmly and with focus. We wish them well with their studies and look forward to the final celebration of the Valedictory Dinner on Thursday 19 November.
The Middle Years Production of Alice in Wonderland was a colourful, visually stunning, musical delight, with a cast of almost 60 Grammarians from Years 5 to 8 singing and dancing their hearts out. Congratulations to all the cast and the sound and lighting crew from Years 9 and 10, as well as the Drama and Music Departments and all staff who contributed to making this such a successful and enjoyable production.
On Wednesday 21 October, the House Swimming carnival kicked off in the Gourlay Pool in Artemis with Year 10 and then Year 7 on Friday 23 October. The levels of participation, energy and House Spirit were certainly high and the newly elected House leaders were enthusiastic in embracing the new format.
Term 4 is the time for transition activities and events as we look towards 2027. Our 2027 Year 7 participated in Induction and Academic Profiling days, with current Year 6 students welcoming the new students to the campus. Year 5 travelled to Sommers for their Surf Camp and Year 3 to the Dandenong Ranges and we had the first of our Prep Transition mornings at Morris Hall. These are important introductory sessions to help our students to develop new friendships and prepare to step up to the year ahead.
On Friday 30 October, we celebrated World School staff Day at MGGS with special morning teas for staff on various campuses to thank all staff across the school whose passion, expertise and hard work make a real difference to students’ lives every day and continue to build a culture of care and community. Our Student Executive Council 2027encouraged students to write cards to thank the staff and 2027 Vice Captain, Kelly Liu visited the Briefing to deliver a message on behalf of all Grammarians.
We are continuing to reinforce the messaging that sports uniform should not be worn to and from School, unless students have training before school or at the end of the day. Those involved in Years 7 – 9 HPE and Years 9 -10 Fit 4 U classes must change at the start and end of each lesson. As we approach the formal end of year events, Speech Night and the Morris Hall and Merton Hall Carol Services, we appreciate your support in helping to ensure that our Grammarians represent the School with pride, particularly with regard to dress length and the correct white socks.
The second half of Term 4 always goes very quickly, so we need to make the most of every day and finish 2026 as we began, with energy, consistency of effort and a healthy dose of optimism for the year ahead.
Yours sincerely
