A Journey of Growth and Opportunity at Melbourne Girls Grammar

Choosing Melbourne Girls Grammar was a decision deeply rooted in family tradition and the promise of new opportunities for boarding student Amelie Crawford from Tatura, near Shepparton. Her grandmother’s fond memories of her time at MGGS and her father’s positive boarding school experience played a significant role in the family’s choice. Living on a farm far from school, her parents often found it challenging to facilitate her participation in extracurricular activities and social events. Boarding at MGGS has provided a seamless transition from school to after-school activities, allowing her to fully engage in the vibrant school community.

Starting boarding school came with its own set of challenges, particularly homesickness. Initially, she found it difficult to adjust to being away from home. However, the structured routine of regular weekend activities and after-school sports helped her stay busy and distracted, while bonding with new friends.

Amelie says the plethora of activities that MGGS offers have enriched her school life. She has developed a passion for rowing and GSV tennis. Additionally, playing for the Port Melbourne Colts introduced her to girls’ AFL, a sport not available in her hometown. These activities have not only helped her make new friends but also provided unique experiences that she cherishes.

Being at MGGS has significantly influenced Amelie’s future goals and aspirations. She believes that exposure to diverse cultures and lifestyles in a big city has broadened her perspective, while meeting parents with various professions has opened her eyes to different career possibilities. Amelie says that MGGS has taught her the importance of hard work, consistency and motivation in achieving great results.

Living with students from diverse backgrounds has been a transformative experience for Amelie. Before MGGS, she had limited exposure to people from Melbourne or other parts of the world. Here, she has learned about Indigenous traditions, Vietnamese family values, and the varied lifestyles of students from different regions. This exposure has taught her that despite their differences, they can find common ground and build meaningful relationships.

One of the unique aspects of boarding at MGGS is the opportunity to explore Melbourne. The city’s excellent public transport system has given Amelie a sense of independence. She loves rowing on the Yarra River, running in the Botanical Gardens, and attending events at the MCG. These experiences have made her appreciate the vibrant culture and convenience of city life.

The Melbourne Girls Grammar Boarding House is in the very heart of Melbourne. It is an environment where boarders feel comfortable trying new things and challenging themselves in a supportive community. They are bold, dynamic and ready to take on anything.
