Music

Music is a vibrant and exciting aspect of co-curricular life at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Our students perform in a wide range of ensembles across age, year and instrument levels.

Classroom Music

All students study Classroom Music in Prep – Year 5 and students in Years 5 and 6 participate in Music Performance classes. Students in Years 6 – 10 may choose to take Classroom Music as an elective subject and VCE Music Performance is offered in Years 11 and 12.

Music electives provide opportunities for performing, creating and exploring music of all kinds. Students are encouraged to be confident performers as well as creative and critical thinkers who respond to music with insight and understanding.

Choirs & Ensembles

Performance opportunities range from informal soirees to large scale concert events and venues include the Melbourne Town Hall, the Melbourne Recital Centre and St Paul’s Cathedral.

House Music

There are five Houses at Melbourne Girls Grammar: Batman, Clarke, Hensley, Mungo and Taylor. The interhouse music program fosters House spirit, camaraderie and participation for all students.

The annual House Music Competition is a much loved tradition which involves all students from Year 5 to Year 12. This is a student led event which showcases the choral and instrumental skills of the girls in each of the Houses.

Private Music Tuition

The music department offers private tuition in a range of instruments as well as lessons in voice and music theory.

All students who learn an instrument are encouraged to join an ensemble to support their musical development and general wellbeing.
