Melbourne Girls Grammar is proud of its history of empowering young women through outstanding education. Over generations, we have honoured the capability of girls to do incredible things in a variety of fields on the world stageOur graduates share a common experience – that during their time at the School they had the chance to make the most of every opportunity and were supported and encouraged to achieve their very best. 

We offer a range of academic scholarships that vary in the percentage of tuition fees waived. Our alumnae are often the generous benefactors of these scholarships as women who have not only received an outstanding education at our school but remain proud members of our community.

Academic excellence scholarships

Applications are now open.

Each year, a number of academic scholarships are available and range in percentage of tuition fees waived. 

These are merit based and require candidates to: 

  1. Apply and sit the academic test in February at MGGS, and 
  2. Attend an interview with the Principal, if shortlisted.

Some of the Academic Excellence Scholarships are available thanks to the generosity of Old Grammarians. These recognise the connections between past scholars and the School and demonstrate the generosity of our community to share the experiences and education that they enjoyed.

ELIGIBILITY 

Melbourne Girls Grammar Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded each year to talented students entering: 

  • Year 5 
  • Year 7, and 
  • Year 9 

Applicants must show a genuine commitment to academic outcomes and be motivated to join our values-based community.

HOW TO APPLY 

Applications for Academic Excellence Scholarships open in November each year. 

Candidates for Academic Scholarships at Melbourne Girls Grammar are required to register via the online application portal. To apply, please provide your details above and you will receive an email with a link to the online application portal.

THE SELECTION PROCESS 

Candidates for Academic Scholarships are required to sit the academic examination conducted by Academic Assessment Services (AAS). The examination takes place at Melbourne Girls Grammar in early February. 

Results are evaluated and a shortlist of candidates contacted for an interview with the Principal. The Scholarship is awarded at the sole discretion of the Principal. 

Academic Excellence Scholarships do not cover additional costs such as uniforms, textbooks and equipment, camps and excursions or any other co-curricular activities such as music and sporting lessons. Normal enrolment fees apply in all cases. 

Old Grammarians Scholarship 

Applications are now open.

The Old Grammarians Society created this scholarship in 1920 and has ensured its continuance for over a century. The OG Scholarship recognises the value Old Grammarians placed on their education at the School and their desire to assist others to have the same opportunity. 

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS 

The successful recipient of the Old Grammarians Scholarship will receive a total of $10,000 ($2,500 per annum for four years) to support their learning at Melbourne Girls Grammar from Years 9 12.  

ELIGIBILITY 

The Old Grammarians Scholarship is made available to students for entry into Year 9. The three overarching eligibility criteria for the Old Grammarians Scholarship are as follows: 

  1. Applicants must be related to an Old Grammarian. An Old Grammarian refers to any person who has attended Melbourne Girls Grammar for any period of time
  2. Candidates must demonstrate a dedication to their academic studies, evidenced by performance in the AAS examination.
  3. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to flourish in and give back to the Melbourne Girls Grammar community through service.

HOW TO APPLY 

Applications for the Old Grammarians Scholarship open in November each year. 

Candidates for the Old Grammarians Scholarship are required to: 

  1. Register via the online application portal for the academic test 
  2. Complete a separate Old Grammarians Scholarship Applicant Form (provided at the time of registration)
  3. Write a letter to the Principal, addressing the following points: 
    • why they would like to attend Melbourne Girls Grammar
    • how their Old Grammarian heritage is important
    • the things they are interested in at school, in the broader community, and/or as a future career path
    • how they live the values of MGGS – courage, compassion, integrity and self discipline.

Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship

Applications are now open.  

The inaugural Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship provides financial support to students from entry into Year 7 in 2022 and until graduation in Year 12. The Scholarship has been created to support girls who demonstrate high intellectual ability, community mindedness and good character and who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to study at an independent school.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP 

The Lapin Hurst family have a long and rich association with the School, having attended both Melbourne Girls Grammar and Melbourne Grammar School for four generations. The family members have benefitted greatly from the education they received at these Schools and consider the education of young women to be the most important part of contemporary societal development. Their hope is to contribute to this development through the scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS 

The successful recipient of the Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship will receive fee remission for at least 80% of tuition costs for the duration of their schooling at Melbourne Girls Grammar, from entry in Year 7 through to Year 12. The Scholarship does not cover additional expenses such as uniform, books or camps, local trips or specialist programs.

ELIGIBILITY 

The Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2021 to a student entering Year 7 in 2022.

The three overarching eligibility criteria for the Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship are as follows:

  1. Applicants must demonstrate a love of learning, community spirit, an interest in providing leadership to other students, and the potential to achieve if provided the right learning environment and fee relief.
  2. Applicants must be Australian citizens, or permanent residents.
  3. The financial circumstances of the applicant’s family will be taken into consideration, as well as the potential for the Scholarship to improve the applicant’s educational experience.

HOW TO APPLY 

Applications are now open for students seeking entry into Year 7 in 2022.

Candidates are required to complete an online application form. In addition to this form, each candidate is asked to submit an essay of no more than 500 words expanding on the following statement:

Why is this scholarship important to you, and how do you see that it will set you up for the future?

THE SELECTION PROCESS 

  1. Academic testing: Candidates for the Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship are required to sit the academic examination conducted by Academic Assessment Services (AAS). The examination takes place at Melbourne Girls Grammar in February 2021.
  2. Written essay: Candidates are required to complete a 500 word essay covering: Why is this scholarship important to you, and how do you see that it will set you up for the future?
  3. Shortlisting: Following the receipt of academic results and after review of the written essay, candidates will be shortlisted.
  4. Financial documentation: Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and requested to submit supporting financial documentation.
  5. Evaluation: on verification and completion of all the eligibility criteria, candidates will be invited for interview with the Principal of Melbourne Girls Grammar.
  6. Interview with Principal: The Principal will engage the candidates at interview at which time the awardee will be determined.
  7. Offer: The selected candidate will be contacted, and a formal offer made. Written acceptance of the Scholarship offer is required within two weeks.

The Lapin Hurst Family Scholarship is awarded at the sole discretion of the Principal.

Barbara and Ralph WardAmbler Scholarship

Applications are now closed.  

The Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler Scholarship provides financial support to cover the costs associated with tuition at the School over four consecutive years (9-12). This perpetual scholarship has been created to support girls of high intellectual aptitude and who can demonstrate academic excellence but who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to study at an independent school.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP 

Barbara Ward-Ambler and Ralph Ward-Ambler AM have a long and rich association with the School with generations of the Ward-Ambler family having enjoyed their education at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Barbara Ward-Ambler (Bult, 1956) and Ralph (Kinder 1940) are Old Grammarians, as well as Barbara and Ralph’s granddaughters Emily Ward-Ambler (2012) and Sarah Ward-Ambler (2017). Ralph’s mother, Cecilia Ward-Ambler (Tomlinson, 1912) (dec.), and sister Cecilia Jacqueline Clarke (Ward-Ambler, 1949), as well as Barbara’s Aunt Frances Vorrath (Bult, 1931) were also educated at Melbourne Girls Grammar.  

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS 

The successful recipient of the Barbara and Ralph WardAmbler Scholarship will receive full remission for tuition fees for the duration of their schooling at Melbourne Girls Grammar, from entry in Year 9 through to Year 12. The Scholarship will also cover additional expenses such as uniform, books or camps, local trips and specialist programs. 

ELIGIBILITY 

The three overarching eligibility criteria for the Barbara and Ralph WardAmbler Scholarship are as follows: 

  1. Applicants must show a genuine commitment to academic outcomes and be motivated to join our values-based community. 
  2. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents. 
  3. The financial circumstances of the applicant’s family will be taken into consideration, as well as the potential for the Scholarship to improve the applicant’s educational experience. 

HOW TO APPLY 

Applications for the inaugural recipient of the Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler Scholarship for entry in 2021 are now closed. This scholarship will next be available for a student entering Year 9 in 2025. 

Candidates are required to complete an online application form. In addition to this form, each candidate is asked to submit a letter, in her own words, outlining why she would like to study at Melbourne Girls Grammar. This letter should also provide examples of her commitment to the School’s core values – courage, integrity, compassion and self discipline. 

THE SELECTION PROCESS 

Candidates for Barbara and Ralph Ward-Ambler Scholarship are required to sit the academic examination conducted by Academic Assessment Services (AAS). The examination takes place at Melbourne Girls Grammar. 

Results are evaluated and a shortlist of candidates will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Shortlisted candidates will also be requested to submit supporting financial documentation at this time. The Scholarship is awarded at the sole discretion of the Principal.
