A Boarding School in the heart of melbourne

Melbourne Girls Grammar is an independent school just a stone’s throw from the city and is the only private boarding school in the heart of Melbourne. Located on the edge of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Yarra River, the School is within easy walking distance to Melbourne’s CBD including the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Flinders Street Station and Federation Square.

Boarders often run or walk the track around the Botanic Gardens (‘The Tan’) on the weekends or after school, and walking to Domain Road for a hot chocolate is an age-old tradition.

World-class sporting and cultural events at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Melbourne’s iconic shopping and entertainment precinct, Chapel Street, are literally on our doorstep.

Philosophy

‘Every Girl – Every Day’ is the foundation upon which all of our wellbeing structures and supports are based.

The Boarding House exists only to provide access to a valuable education that would otherwise be inaccessible. We are a well-resourced residence and we are proud of our ability to be responsive to the individual, the cohort and ever-changing needs of today’s youth.

Our academic and residential boarding school routines are designed to best suit adolescent girls within a community living environment.

Boarding school students learn to be accountable for managing their own life. In practical terms, this provides preparation for adult life after school.

The MGGS Boarding House is a domain where each girl is embraced for their individuality, encouraged for their ambition, and supported in their challenges.

Wellbeing

At Melbourne Girls Grammar, we believe an exceptional education for life not only focuses on academic skills, but emotional and physical wellbeing as well. We know that in order to succeed, our students must feel supported and settled in their environments.

The wellbeing of each student is managed within a ‘triangle of care’. Parenting from a distance can be difficult and staff encourage regular and open communication to ensure that all needs are met. Consistent with our push for student agency, girls are invited to direct the course of their wellbeing pathway with the guidance of a Wellbeing Coach.

The role of the Wellbeing Coach is unique within the MGGS framework, as it is designed to benefit the student in a personalised, collaborative and confidential manner. Through active listening and collaboration, coaches come together to design and implement small and full cohort group activities and programs that are directly responsive to the needs of each cohort.

Our new Artemis Centre is at the heart of the wellbeing agenda at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Available to boarders on Saturdays and some nights after school, the centre features a pool, multipurpose courts, a gym and a café.

Facilities

The Boarding House at Melbourne Girls Grammar accommodates approximately 90 local, rural and overseas boarding school students from Years 7 – 12.

The sharing of rooms strengthens the bond between boarders. Our younger boarders are accommodated in rooms of four, encouraging them to live harmoniously with one another. Year 11 boarding school students are allocated double rooms and all Year 12 boarding school students have their own room.

Several common areas are open to all boarding school students at certain times within the Boarding House routine. Group study areas provide an opportunity to develop collaborative learning outside the classroom.

Other facilities available to girls in the homely Boarding House include laundries, kitchenettes, break-out spaces and Wi-Fi.

Staff

Our dynamic Boarding School Team has a broad range of experience in education and adolescent health. The boarding staff members are typically post-graduate university students, best equipped to assist girls to transition successfully to MGGS and to boarding.

Residential staff know each girl in her complexity and provide her with an environment that enables her to thrive academically and personally. Boarders are supported daily within a trust-based setting.

Residential staff also tutor in a range of subject areas. In addition, external tutors are provided for subjects such as maths, science and languages.

The motivation and drive from the teaching staff was a key factor to my schooling achievements.
