Sport

“The Sport and Fitness world is a dynamic and changing environment and Sport at Merton Hall is all about ensuring students are exposed to, and are aware of, the evolving nature of many sporting opportunities. We give girls the knowledge and the skill to take care of their own social, emotional, physical and psychological wellbeing, well into adulthood.”

Tonia Douglas, Head of Sport

Part of the day and the life of a Merton Hall student is to participate in Sport. Approximately 95% of students are involved in our extensive and exciting Sports Program. We nurture a House System where leaders are born, teamwork is created, individual champions are recognised and participation is rewarded. A huge amount of fun and team spirit is experienced in our Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country and Gymnastic House events.

Melbourne Girls Grammar is associated with Girls Sport Victoria (GSV), where twenty-four girl’s schools come together and participate in over twenty different sports throughout the year. Sports include, softball, cricket, swimming, water polo, diving, hockey, netball, soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, indoor cricket, cross country, athletics and gymnastics. We enter a maximum of teams in all events so that all girls have an opportunity to experience many of these Sports. Over thirty external coaches, including elite level coaching, work with the girls. We aim to give the girls the best experience and to gain the maximum, out of every training and game playing session.

Rowing, Equestrian, Snowsports and Saturday Netball are very popular Sports, sort after by the girls. These four Sports are successfully managed with the assistance of parent committees. Competition is fierce, yet participation and fun sit high on the agenda.

All students at Merton Hall have an opportunity to pursue other avenues of Sport which best suits their needs, age and interests. The girls are offered a selection of Sports which focus on developing their core body strength. In the fully equipped gymnasium, professional instructors conduct weekly sessions in body balance classes, aerobics, fitness classes and gym work outs using the bikes, ergos and free weights.

All of these Sporting opportunities are complemented with external camps, coaching clinics, state selection opportunities and the joining of local clubs.
