Biology Olympiad

26 October 2009

Millicent Burggraf (Year 11) has been selected from 3000 elite Science students to attend the 16 day intensive Australian Science Olympiad Summer School held in January 2010 at Monash University Melbourne. Only 20 students were invited to participate in the Biology Summer School and Millicent was one of them.

The international Olympiad teams are then chosen from these students.

An outstanding achievement.

The University of Melbourne Mentor Program for Highly Able Senior Secondary Students

16 November 2009

Three Year 10 students were offered a marvellous opportunity to work with a mentor from the University of Melbourne (a Masters student or PhD candidate) in an area of passion for six months this year.

Georgina Clough researched Monarchs, Malevolence and Murder in Medieval England:  Becket, Henry and the ‘Constitution of Clarendon’;
Anna Gruen’s project was ‘What’s a Nice Girl like you doing in a place like this?’  Julia Gillard, Ambition and the Australian Media; and
Imogen Rea researched ‘How Homelessness Affects Australia’s Gross Domestic Product?

They represented Merton Hall with distinction and we congratulate the girls on their magnificent efforts.

National Mathematics Summer School (NMSS)

13 October 2009

Congratulations to Kikie Miu (Year 11) for receiving an invitation to participate in the 42nd ANU-AAMT National Mathematics Summer School.

NMSS is the oldest and most prestigious Summer School of its type in Australia. Successful applicants are chosen partly on the basis of performance in a specially set selection examination and partly on the student’s own submission and supporting testimony from the student’s School. Approximately 75 students from all over Australia are chosen to participate in this two weeks program for the discovery and development of mathematically gifted and talented students. It is a considerable honour for Kikie to have been selected.

Kikie will join Year 12 students Stephanie Ang and Dana Ma who attended the 41st NMSS and who have been invited back next year to assist in the program. This is a first for MGGS to have students attend consecutive years of NMSS and a great credit to Stephanie and Dana.

We wish Kikie, Stephanie and Dana much pleasure and a merry mathematical time at NMSS in January 2010.
