Dana Ma, a Year 12 student at Melbourne Girls Grammar, has been
selected as one of 6 team members to represent Australia at the International
Maths Olympiad to be held at Bremen Germany on 10 July. Dana is one of only
4 female students to represent Australia in the Olympiad since 1999 and is
the second MGGS student to achieve this distinction.
In preparation for team selection, Dana completed two 4 hour mathematics
examinations conducted by the Australian Mathematical Olympiad. Of the 101
students who participated Dana has been awarded a Gold Certificate, the
highest award given.
MGGS Principal, Mrs Catherine Misson, describes Dana as an exceptional student. “Dana
has a passion for mathematics”, continued Catherine, “which she combines
with an outstanding work ethic. This achievement is a tribute to her
tenacity over many years to hone her mathematical thinking, to be an
exceptional problem solver, and to be a tremendous team player. These are
educational qualities which are highly valued at MGGS.”
Dana was
also recently named as the joint Hanna Neumann scholar for 2009 by the
Mathematical Association of Victoria which is a prestigious award, given in
recognition of gifted ability in mathematics.
