As a Christian school in the Anglican tradition, we seek
opportunities to have our students engaged with the wider community and
actively contribute to making a difference to the lives of others. This
social service program not only focuses on raising funds for disadvantaged
groups and worthwhile charities, but also provides an opportunity for
student groups to engage in dialogue about social justice issues, to
develop projects for practical assistance and to raise awareness amongst other
members of the school community.
On an annual basis students in the Middle School are involved in the
Anglicare Winter appeal, and the Student Executive Council will generally
support 5 or 6 charities that generally focus on Youth Issues or medical research.
This year the SEC major focus was the Berry Street Children’s
Services. This organisation develops educational and support programs for
young people who are disadvantaged and not able to live with their
families.
Each House also undertakes a small fundraising project each year. In
the past few months this has included: Country Fire Authority, Bushfire
Appeal, Prahran Uniting Care Mission, Homeless World Cup Soccer, Blue
Dragon Children’s Foundation and the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre.
A group of eight year 11 students have been fundraising for Project
Holy Name. These girls travelled to Papua New Guinea in September and brought
clothing and basic medical supplies with them. During their stay they will worked
with the villagers and the medical staff accompanying them. Their practical
assistance on the trip sees the girls really making a difference in the
lives of others...and after all that is the real purpose of fundraising.
