At MGGS
we are privileged to have the Chapel of Saint Luke for prayer and
reflection, and recognize the value of setting aside time to meet each
student’s spiritual needs. This happens at the start of each day.
Middle
and Senior School Chapel and Wednesday Eucharist all provide opportunities
– in the words of William Penn – “to take care of the interior self, the
spiritual self, even if it is for a few moments a day”.
Throughout the year, important
annual events occur in the Chapel of Saint Luke. These include Valedictory,
inauguration of the School Council and confirmations. In addition to
attendance in the Chapel, all girls study religion in Years 7-9 and all
girls in Year 10 study one unit of the VCE study, Ethics. While the subject
is approached from a Christian perspective consistent with the Anglican
traditions, studies aim to create understanding and tolerance through an
awareness of various religious interpretations of life. Studies include
Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.
Students
are encouraged to look closely at themselves and to consider how their
personal traits and characteristics can be productively reconciled with
contemporary society. Our emphasis is on fostering the growth of healthy
spiritual values.
As an
Anglican school, we aim to ensure that every student and, indeed, every
member of our community, will come to appreciate the Christian faith.
Please
note that Melbourne Girls Grammar accepts students of all faiths and
religious denominations. Attendance for events in the Chapel is compulsory
but participation is voluntary.
