The Art Program consists of classroom art and the co-curricular Art
Program. At Years 7 and 8, art is a core curriculum subject and at Years 9
– 12, art is an elective the girls may choose.
In the Middle School the girls explore a range or materials
including: freehand drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, textiles and
graphic design. These skills are applied to a number of subject matter such
as landscape, still life and portraiture. The girls study pre and post-modern
indigenous art as well art movements such as Colonialism, Modernism and
Postmodernism.
In the Senior School the girls can choose from a wide variety of
subjects from Photography, Sculpture, Painting and Design in Year 10 to
Art, Studio Arts and Visual Communication and Design at a VCE level. The
girls develop their use of materials and techniques such as copperplate
etching, oil painting, digital and analogue photography, technical drawing,
ICT use through Photoshop and Illustrator.
The Art program is enhanced by our proximity to the cultural heart
of Melbourne and our students see a diverse range of exhibitions at
galleries and art spaces. The Art Committee is an opportunity for girls to
express their creative voice in the wider-school community through school
beautification projects, art competitions and by assisting with exhibition
planning. Throughout the year, the co-curricular art classes, which are run
by a practicing artist, give students the opportunity to spread their
creative wings outside the class room. Life drawing and co-curricular
photography classes are also on offer for Senior School students.
The highlight of the School’s art calendar is the MGGS Annual Art
exhibition held in Term 4. This exhibition features artwork from Prep to
Year 12 and showcases works from a wide variety of mediums and ideas. In
addition to the Art Exhibition, this year will see the inaugural Open
Studio Evening take place on 25 August at 6pm. This evening will give
senior school students an opportunity to demonstrate their working practices
to parents and friends.
Artists in Residence Program
Art residencies are a feature of the Art Department and students
have the opportunity each year to work with artists from local and
international communities. Some artists we have worked with are Ryan
Kenneday, Helen Kennedy, Lucy Mora, Darren Davidson, Simon O’Dwyer, Joanna
Weir, Pamela Irving and Heather Kennedy. Much of this work, created in
conjunction with Art students, is on display around the school grounds.
