Curricular
Music is vital in the life of MGGS. Music classroom lessons are a
core subject from the ELC - Year 8. At Years 9 – 12, music is an elective
that girls may chose.
Approximately 60 per cent of all girls learn music individually at
MGGS from a large number of experienced specialist music teachers and many
others learn outside the School.
At Senior School, the Music Department is situated in a purpose
built facility that incorporates an orchestral rehearsal studio able to
seat our 65 piece orchestra and a superb acoustically designed Choral
Studio which supports the large number of choral singing groups offered.
The Music School also houses two fully equipped music classrooms including
one devoted to the use of technology, and 10 individual teaching rooms.
All
girls in the School participate in singing. Past works performed have
included Faure’s Requiem, choruses from operas, the Finale of Beethoven’s
Choral Symphony and Vivaldi’s Gloria (in association with the choir of
Melbourne Grammar). There are a number of opportunities for MGGS senior
students to participate in joint orchestral and choral performances with
Melbourne Boys Grammar and other schools. In addition, MGGS senior students
perform at the annual Speech Night and the annual Carol Service in St Paul’s Cathedral. All girls participate in rigorously contested House Music competition.

Co-Curricular
The Co-Curricular program is extensive across the School.
Junior School offers participation in thirteen choirs, a Concert Band, string groups,
instrumental groups and an orchestra.
In Senior School girls have the opportunity to participate in fourteen
ensembles (Broadway Babies, Chamber Music,
Fiddle Fusion, Flute Ensemble, Jazz Band, Merton Chamber Voices, Merton
Hall Orchestra, Merton Senior Choir, Middle School Mertons, Mixed Choir,
Pianists Plus, Senior Strings, Stage Band, Twelve Tones) that rehearse weekly
as well as to join the special choir that leads the worship in the traditional
annual Carol Service. This Service has presented in St Paul’s Anglican
Cathedral for over forty years.
House Music involves all Senior School students and is a much
anticipated annual competition.
One of our choirs rehearses weekly with the Senior Choir from Melbourne Grammar School and we also present an annual Musical with the boys. Each school
directs the musical in turn.
