Performing and Visual Arts

At Melbourne Girls Grammar, art, drama, music and other creative endeavours receive close attention. Art and the creation of art is a compulsory part of the curriculum until the end of Middle School and elective subjects in the Performing and Visual Arts are available up to VCE level.

Both art and music provide excellent opportunities for girls to work with modern technology. These include the creation of computer-aided art, sound engineering, and electronically synthesized music.

Students are encouraged to take pleasure and pride in the mastery of techniques in drawing, painting, print-making, textiles, ceramics and graphic design.

At Junior and Middle School levels everyone participates in music appreciation and making music, often discovering a life-long talent. Many students continue their musical studies into senior years. They achieve a high level of mastery in choirs, orchestra and in ensembles, developing habits of discipline, concentration, persistence, reliability and collaboration – valuable attributes in all fields of endeavour. Music can be seen as a new ‘language’ to understand and interpret for what it reveals about social and political history, different cultures and individual experience.

Cultural and historical contexts are further explored in the study of drama. Practical and theoretical activities help students to understand and appreciate performing art, with several major dramatic productions held each year.

Studies are enhanced by our proximity to the cultural heart of Melbourne, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, Hamer Hall, the Arts Centre, the Melbourne Recital Centre and Shakespearean plays in the Botanical Gardens.
